Open cell vs closed cell

Two foams.
Each has its place.

We'll recommend the right one for each part of the job, and tell you where a cheaper material works just as well.

Open cell

Soft, light, quiet.

About R-3.7 per inch

  • Expands to fill every gap. An excellent air seal
  • Absorbs sound between rooms and floors
  • Lets moisture pass, so leaks don't stay hidden
  • Lower cost per square foot

Best for: interior walls, roof decks in unvented attics, ceilings, soundproofing.

Closed cell

Dense, rigid, waterproof.

About R-7.2 per inch

  • Highest R-value in the thinnest space
  • Acts as a vapor and water barrier
  • Adds rigidity to walls and roof decks
  • Holds up in damp areas

Best for: crawlspaces, rim joists, below-grade walls, metal buildings, tight framing.

Where we spray

From attics to studios.

Roof decks

Turn a hot attic into conditioned space. Ducts and equipment up there stay cooler and work less.

New walls & remodels

Open framing on a remodel or addition is the best time to get a full air seal.

Crawlspaces & rim joists

Closed cell blocks ground moisture and the drafts that come up through floors.

ADUs & garages

Garage conversions and backyard units meet Title 24 with less wall thickness.

Soundproofing

Home studios, theaters, podcast rooms and commercial spaces. We've even foamed a school bus studio.

Fire rebuilds

Plan it early and the SoCalGas rebuild program can pay part of the insulation.

Palisades & Eaton fire rebuilds

Rebuilding? Get paid to insulate better.

SoCalGas's Fire Rebuild program pays per square foot for high-performance insulation in new homes in 2025 fire-area zip codes. The catch: you have to apply before construction starts, using your Title 24 energy report.

Ceiling insulation

Up to $3.00

per sq ft

Above R-38: $2.30 · above R-44: $2.50 · above R-60: $3.00 per sq ft.

Wall insulation

$1.65

per sq ft

For qualifying wall insulation listed on the energy report.

What it takes

Plan early

before construction starts

The home needs qualifying natural gas equipment, and the R-values on the approved Title 24 report (CF-1R) are what gets paid. We work with your architect and energy consultant to spec it right.

Program rules, eligible zip codes and funding are set by SoCalGas and can change. Building all-electric? Different programs apply; ask us.
